History

John
Tyler Morgan Academy
was incorporated as a non-profit educational institution in June of 1965. The school is named for Alabama Senator, John Tyler Morgan.

The first school year began in September of 1965 with 119 students in grades one through six. The original school building was located in the old John Tyler Morgan house.

The 1966-1967 school year opened with 183 students, with grades 7 and 8 attending classes in the Houston Park Church of Christ. During this period, a new school building with 13 classrooms and a cafeteria was constructed on a 29 acre campus. This is the present site of Morgan Academy.

In 1968, Morgan Academy received its accreditation from the Alabama State Department of Education. In 1969, a high school building with 3 classrooms, a biology lab, chemistry lab and office space was erected and the cafeteria was enlarged. During the 1970-1971 school year, 8 new classrooms and a gymnasium were constructed. The twelfth and final grade was also added that year.

Morgan Academy K-12 received accreditation from the Alabama State Department of Education and The Alabama Private School Association during the 1979 school year. That same year, a new office complex was constructed, and in 1980, a new 2 classroom building was constructed to house the kindergarten classes.

In 1983, the gymnasium was enlarged to include a band room, weight room, coach's office, dressing rooms for both boys and girls and storage for athletic equipment. Additions include a kindergarten, numerous classrooms, a high school computer lab, athletic fields, a football stadium, a spacious cafeteria and an elementary playground.

In 1994, four new classrooms, boys and girls restrooms, teacher's lounge and storage areas were added to the high school complex, and the library was remodeled and enlarged. In 1995, a new computer lab was completed and fully equipped with new computers.

In 1997, additions included an elementary computer lab and a first grade wing. Internet capabilities were added to the school's two computer labs, the library and the school office. In 2002, a new state of the art gymnasium was completed. A new science lab was completed and began accommodating students in 2003.

In August of 2003, having met its academic obligations, John T. Morgan Academy received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

During its over 37 years in existence, Morgan has grown: in campus size, in the number of students and most importantly, in the quality of the educational and social opportunities provided for its students.

The Board of Directors of Morgan Academy is most grateful to the people who have given so generously of their time, money and talents. We are looking forward to the future with the hope and expectation of greater things to come.

Today, Morgan Academy has 540 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.
